Satovcha Municipality – the first GMO free region in Bulgarian
AGROLINK The residents of Satovcha Municipality, Blagoevgrad region pronounced their land free of GMO.The decision was taken after a public discussion on March 20, 2006. Informational seminar was organized as a part of the campaign of AGROLINK Association to pronounce the whole Rhrodope Mountain free of GMO. Between the participants were the mayor of Satovcha – Arben Mimenov, representatives of the state administration, the Agricultural Counseling Service and many producers not only from the village but also from the whole region. The local authorities signed a declaration by which they join the free GMO regions that exist all over Europe. By this act Satovcha Municipality guarantees the quality of their production and their concern for the unique environment in the region.
The presentations were made by Dr. Svetla Nikolova, Dr. Elena Apostolova and Donka Kalcheva.
Ms. Nikolova also made a presentation on the organic farming as an alternative for development of the region, which provoked a heated discussion.
The seminar was organized with the kind support of a local organic producer of lavender – Dr. Tsachev.
